Synopsys Expands Agentic AI Chip Design Collaboration with AMD and Microsoft
Synopsys, a provider of electronic design automation (EDA) software and semiconductor design tools, has introduced new agentic AI workflows for chip design developed in collaboration with Microsoft and used by AMD, extending its push toward autonomous engineering across the semiconductor design lifecycle. The new capabilities are available for evaluation through Microsoft Discovery, Microsoft's platform for scientific research and engineering. The Synopsys, AMD, and Microsoft collaboration aims to enable AI-powered design workflows that combine large-scale reasoning, domain expertise, and cloud-scale compute to accelerate the development of the next generation of AI infrastructure silicon.
The release includes two new electronic design automation (EDA) workflows that automate portions of chip development from design specification through debugging. Synopsys said initial testing of its autonomous debug closure workflow demonstrated up to a 40% reduction in debug cycle time. The workflows are designed to orchestrate multiple AI agents that can perform specialized design tasks while integrating with existing engineering tools and processes.
AMD is using the technology as part of its semiconductor design efforts, while Microsoft provides the cloud-based infrastructure through Microsoft Discovery to support evaluation and deployment of the AI-driven workflows. The collaboration is intended to help engineering teams reduce manual effort and accelerate time to silicon. At the 2026 DAC Chips to Systems Conference, Synopsys will showcase new fully autonomous workflows powered by AgentEngineerâ„¢ technology, extending agentic AI from task automation to long-running engineering execution.
