GPT-5 is Coming with Unified AI System and Deeper Reasoning
OpenAI has begun the gradual rollout of GPT-5, the company's new flagship large language model, to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers worldwide. Enterprise and Edu plan availability is planned for the near future, with GPT-5 becoming the default model for all logged-in ChatGPT users across web, mobile, and desktop.
The company describes GPT-5 as a unified, auto-switching system that integrates the capabilities of prior models into a smart, fast model. GPT-5 introduces a deeper reasoning mode called GPT-5 Thinking, which engages automatically for more complex requests. As OpenAI explains, GPT-5 "can 'think' more deeply when a problem benefits from careful analysis, especially for complex work like coding, science questions, information synthesis, and data or financial analysis." With GPT-5, users do not need to choose the "right" model for their tasks, as ChatGPT "automatically adapts to the task, delivering faster, higher-quality, and more reliable results." The model uses a real-time router that decides which mode to use based on conversation type, complexity, tool needs, and user intent.
Key Features
- Unified System: GPT-5 automatically decides whether to use its Chat or Thinking mode for a given request. Users on paid plans can also manually select GPT-5 or GPT-5 Thinking.
- Professional Output: The model generates professional, long-form documents and reports that are structured and polished.
- Data Synthesis: GPT-5 can integrate insights from multiple uploaded reports, datasets, or connected apps, such as Google Drive, to provide evidence-based recommendations.
- Tool Compatibility: The model works with all existing ChatGPT tools without limitation, including web search, data analysis, image analysis, file analysis, image generation, Memory, and Custom Instructions.

Automatic switching from GPT-5 to GPT-5 Thinking does not count toward the weekly limit for Plus or Team users.
Example Use Cases
- Engineering: Multi-repo architecture reviews, analyzing diagrams and code snippets to identify scalability, security, and maintainability risks.
- Sales: Strategic account planning using CRM notes[.
- Marketing: Creating a multi-channel content kit for a product launch, including a press release, social posts, and a blog draft.
- Finance: Quarterly forecasts and variance analysis with proposed mitigation strategies.
- Operations: Process optimization plans based on SOP documents and performance metrics.
Model Deprecations
The GPT-5 launch retires several older models, including GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.5, GPT-4.1-mini, o4-mini, o4-mini-high, o3, and o3-pro. Existing conversations will automatically migrate to a GPT-5 equivalent. Chats with o3 will open in GPT-5-Thinking, while conversations with o3-Pro will open in GPT-5-Pro, a model available only on Pro and Team plans.
More Information for Enterprise Use
The company's OpenAI Academy site provides a complete take on the new upgrade, with lots of information and links to other resources like "GPT for Builders."
It also provide helpful notes for enterprise use, like this:
Note: On August 7th (August 14th for Enterprise), GPT-5 will become your default model with unlimited* messages. Teams users are able to use GPT-4o, OpenAI o3, o4-mini, GPT-4.1, and GPT-4.5 with the same limits as today for the first 60 days after launch. Enterprise Admins must toggle back to legacy models for their teams in Admin Settings.
