Agentic AI Foundation Launches MCP Certification Program

The Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), a Linux Foundation initiative focused on open standards for agentic AI, has launched the Model Context Protocol Associate, or MCPA, certification, creating a credential focused specifically on developers working with MCP-based AI integrations.

MCP provides a standardized method for connecting AI applications and agents with external data sources, tools, and services. The MCPA program is intended to assess whether practitioners understand the protocol and can apply it when building production integrations.

The certification covers MCP architecture and core concepts, building servers and clients, tool and resource implementation, security and authentication, debugging, and production deployment. Candidates complete an assessment intended to test both conceptual knowledge and practical implementation skills.

The foundation is positioning MCPA as a vendor-neutral credential rather than one tied to a particular model provider or enterprise AI platform. That distinction could become increasingly relevant as organizations use MCP to expose the same internal systems to agents built with different models and development frameworks.

For enterprise development teams, MCP expertise is becoming more consequential as agents move from generating responses to interacting with databases, APIs, and business applications. Those connections create additional requirements around authentication, authorization, data exposure, and auditing, making secure protocol implementation as important as basic tool connectivity.
