According to an August 10 blog post by the threat intelligence company Flashpoint, growing opposition to AI development, in combination with the accessibility of low-cost First-Person View (FPV) drone technology, is creating a new physical security challenge for data center operators.
The company says data centers now sit at the intersection of several growing pressures, including public backlash against AI expansion. There are also concerns around energy and water usage along with frustration over new infrastructure development.
While much of the existing online discussions remain focused on protests and potential threats, Flashpoint analysts have observed increasingly aggressive rhetoric targeting technology companies, executives, and data center infrastructure.
AI Infrastructure Enters a New Threat Landscape
Data centers have become an essential part of the AI economy, supporting cloud platforms, enterprise operations, and the growing demand for AI workloads.
However, Flashpoint warns that one of the biggest threats is the accessibility of drone technology.
The company says FPV drones have lowered the barrier for potential physical attacks. Previously, airborne threats required specialized equipment and expertise. Today, payload-capable drones can be purchased off the shelf or assembled using commercially available components for under $1000.
The firm says online footage of FPV drones being used in conflict zones has also demonstrated how easily these systems can be adapted for malicious purposes. This poses a new challenge for security teams protecting critical infrastructure.
Online AI Backlash Meets Physical Threats
The Washington, DC-based company says the growing threat does not exist in isolation.
Online conversations around data center expansion have intensified across mainstream platforms as well as Deep and Dark Web forums.
The company identified several drivers behind negative sentiment, including concerns over:
- energy consumption
- water usage
- noise
- local communities
- opposition to rapid AI infrastructure growth.
Traditional Security may not be Enough
The rise of drone-based threats creates challenges for traditional data center security models.
According to Flashpoint, measures such as perimeter monitoring, access controls, and foot patrols may not be sufficient against airborne threats.
Many data centers are not currently equipped with specialized Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS), dedicated training or the legal authority needed to respond effectively to drone incursions.
The company argues that protecting AI infrastructure will require a shift from reactive security toward intelligence-led physical protection.
