How Are AI Coding Assistants Affecting the Job Market?
The rise of AI coding assistants is dramatically reshaping the technology labor market. Industry layoff trackers estimate that well over 400,000 technology workers were laid off in the U.S. during the 18 months between January 2025 and June 2026. Companies are restructuring to fund billions of dollars in AI investments and are reducing demand for routine coding work. This especially affects junior developers and middle management positions.
McCaffrey commented, "AI coding assistants are fueling a technology employment Armageddon. Some research firms suggest that AI will eventually create more tech jobs than it eliminates. I am extremely pessimistic about that claim, at least for the short term of the next five years or so."
"The hundreds of thousands of jobs that have already been eliminated will not reappear in another form for the foreseeable future, and many tens or even hundreds of thousands more tech jobs will be wiped out in the near future."
"The traditional entry-level job that focuses on writing boilerplate code has essentially been eliminated. AI can perform almost all of that work instantly and at very low cost. Organizations will only need engineers who can validate AI-generated code and who can design complex systems using the organization's existing technology infrastructure."

McCaffrey speculated, "As software becomes dramatically cheaper and faster to build, industries that were previously too small to justify custom applications may gain access to sophisticated digital tools. Consumers could eventually benefit from faster innovation and feature development."
"AI-generated code also introduces significant risks, including increased security vulnerabilities, privacy flaws, and a flood of low-quality applications. The future of software development will likely be defined by a balance between productivity gains and the growing need for human oversight, security expertise, and quality control."
"I think it's likely that new business opportunities will be mostly limited to niche applications that were previously too expensive to create, and support technologies that complement AI systems that were created by the dominant players."

McCaffrey suggested, "Historically, most big changes in the technology landscape were over-hyped. But I believe that impact of the rise of AI coding is being seriously underestimated. AI coding is obliterating the technology job landscape permanently. This will have profound negative, short-term, unpredictable consequences for the U.S. economy as a whole."
