Anthropic CEO to Meet with White House Amid Tense Standoff Over New AI Model

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei was scheduled to meet on Friday with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, signaling a potential shift in the tense relationship between the artificial intelligence startup and the Trump administration.
The high-profile West Wing meeting follows months of public disputes and legal challenges. In February, President Donald Trump directed federal agencies to cease using Anthropic’s products after the company refused to remove safety guardrails for the Pentagon. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth subsequently labeled the San Francisco-based firm a supply chain risk, an unprecedented designation for a domestic company. Claude had been the only AI tool used by the Pentagon's classified network.
The recent release of Mythos, a new AI model with advanced cybersecurity capabilities, appears to be driving the current engagement. Mythos is a frontier model capable of autonomously finding and fixing thousands of software vulnerabilities. It can identify cybersecurity threats but also provide a roadmap for hackers to attack companies or the government, making it both valuable and potentially dangerous. Anthropic warned that its power poses significant risks if released publicly.
"It would be grossly irresponsible for the U.S. government to deprive itself of the technological leaps that the new model presents," a source familiar with the discussions told Axios. The administration is now exploring ways for federal agencies to access the model while managing its potential for misuse.
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) recently began establishing protections to allow for the model’s use. Federal Chief Information Officer Gregory Barbaccia confirmed that the agency is establishing frameworks for a technical evaluation period to ensure secure deployment across government systems.
Although the meeting marks what could be described as a "thaw" in relations, legal battles remain ongoing. Anthropic is currently challenging the Pentagon’s supply chain risk designation in two federal courts. An appeals court recently denied the company’s request to temporarily block the label, effectively barring defense contractors from using its Claude AI models for military work during the litigation.
Anthropic has launched Project Glasswing to manage the early deployment of Mythos. The initiative allows a selected group of organizations and governments to use the model for defensive cybersecurity tasks while keeping the underlying technology restricted.
