Google Turns Gemini Into a Team of AI Cloud Assistants
Google burnished its Gemini AI platform this week, announcing a new version milestone and its expansion into the entirety of Google's cloud stack.
The company cut the ribbon around Gemini for Google Cloud at its Cloud Next event, describing it as an enterprise-grade set of AI assistants that are deeply integrated into Google's services.
"These [tools] assist users in working and coding more effectively, gaining deeper data insights, navigating security challenges, and more," wrote Google Cloud vice president Brad Calder in a blog post Monday. "Using Google's Gemini family of models, Gemini for Google Cloud lets teams accomplish more in the cloud."
Calder described six discrete Gemini assistants:
- Gemini Code Assist replaces the older Duet AI for Developers product. This assistant "offers AI-powered assistance to help developers build applications with higher velocity and quality in popular code editors like VS Code and JetBrains." New features include more data and application integrations, while large-scale codebase awareness and code customization capabilities are now in private preview.
- Gemini Cloud Assist is an application lifecycle assistant for the cloud. Users can access Cloud Assist via a chat box in their Google Cloud console, as well as directly within individual Google services.
- Gemini in Security Operations is now a component of Chronicle, Google's security information and event management (SIEM) product. A natural-language "assisted investigation feature" is set to become generally available by the end of April. There are also two new Gemini-branded security tools in public preview: Gemini in Threat Intelligence and Gemini in Security Command Center.
- Gemini in BigQuery, currently in preview, helps data professionals manage, visualize, understand and clean their data using natural language queries. Integration with Google's Vertex AI platform lets users "combine AI models, classic ML operators, and statistical functions together in [their] data pipelines for multi-modal analysis."
- Gemini in Looker is a BI tool. Google announced at Next that it is adding a natural language querying feature, called "Conversational Analytics," in private preview. Other features designed to "accelerate your ability to create sharp visualizations and reports, connect them with Workspace, and share them with your team -- all without writing code" are also in public preview.
- Gemini in Databases is a new product that's currently in preview. It's designed to help users "build applications faster using natural language; manage, optimize and govern an entire fleet of databases from a single pane of glass; and accelerate database migrations."
"With Gemini for Google Cloud," said Calder, "everyone from developers, to cloud operators, to security operators, to business analysts can harness the power of AI."
In other Gemini news this week, Google announced the public preview release of version 1.5. Notable for having a context window of 1 million tokens, Gemini 1.5 now features the ability to process spoken audio. This release can also "reason across both image (frames) and audio (speech) for videos uploaded in Google AI Studio," according to the announcement.
The Gemini 1.5 public preview is available in these countries via API.
